Administration Reveals Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week

The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official ordered the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been brought back to execute staff reductions.

A report contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started prior to the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

These terminations occurred on the very day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
