China Accuses United States of ‘Contradictory Stances’ Regarding Tariff Threat

The former US president’s newest ultimatum to enforce an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods has been described as a “prime illustration” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the China’s leadership.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry additionally remarked that China could enact its own undisclosed “countermeasures” if the American leader follows through on his warning, noting that the country was “not afraid” of a looming commercial battle.

This past Friday, the former president retaliated at China’s decision to reinforce its regulations for exports of rare earths, charging Beijing of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the world “under its control”.

He also threatened to withdraw from a scheduled talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which was set for a conference in the Republic of Korea later this month.

The former president’s remarks on Friday shook global markets, with the S&P 500 falling by over two and a half percent, marking its largest decline since last spring.

These statements reignited fears of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

This past spring, the both nations had agreed to eliminate significant levies on each other’s goods, which had led to concerns of bilateral trade stopping between the economic powers.

This left, American import duties on Chinese goods incurring an added import tax compared with the year’s onset, while American products entering China are subject to a ten percent duty.

Beijing’s recent statements – released by the Commerce Ministry in the form of written responses to press queries – reflected language from the zenith of the ongoing trade dispute.

They criticised US export restrictions on chips and semi-conductors while defending China’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “normal actions” to ensure domestic safety and that of the global community.

Their representative said that for “a long time”, the United States had “overstretched the concept of national security, exploited overseas sale restrictions and “enforced” discriminatory practices against Beijing.

“Using” trade levy ultimatums is not the proper method to engage with Beijing,” the spokesperson stated.

“Beijing’s stance” on a tariff war has remained consistent: we do not want one, but we are fearless of one.”

The previous week, China announced it was strengthening export controls on rare earths and other materials essential to high-technology production.

This move was regarded as a important measure, as the state handles about the vast majority of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in goods such as renewable energy components and handheld devices.

The recent comments from Washington and Beijing are being viewed by analysts as a strategy of bolstering negotiating stances ahead of upcoming negotiations.
